Research has shown that building relationships between neighbors and businesses, and improving street environments can dramatically reduce the number and seriousness of crimes in an area. By making Saginaw and Oakland more walk and bike friendly, by cleaning up graffiti and garbage, and by installing public artwork and nicer landscaping, we can increase property values and bring more customers to our shops and restaurants. Smart, visible strategies like these are what transform blighted areas into vibrant communities united by a shared vision of safety and prosperity.
SOCA’s mission and strategies grew out of a desire to implement solutions like these in an inclusive, thoughtful manner. As a non-profit organization, we bring together merchants, businesses, neighborhood residents, property owners, and cultural organizations through partnerships, projects, and events. Collectively, we’re working hard to revitalize Lansing’s Saginaw Street and Oakland Avenue corridors — from Pennsylvania Avenue to the Point.
